Fiber Arts Camp Morning Session August 7-11

Fiber prep from raw wool to finished top to handspun yarn.

Daily Schedule

Day 1 - Wash raw wool; discuss properties of wool and look at various wool fibers under the microscope, comparing with other fibers such as silk, cotton, linen, polyester. Do burn tests to discover fiber types. Introduction to spinning with a drop spindle using prepared top.

Day 2 - Dyeing the clean wool. Properties of dyes and how things like pH and minerals in water affect outcome. We would use either food color or non-toxic natural dyes (dandelions, marigolds, avocado pits, carrot tops) or both to dye the wool, experimenting with changing pH using vinegar and baking soda. Continue to learn spinning on the drop spindle.

Day 3 - Carding and combing. Learn to use hand cards, drum carder, and combs to prepare the dyed wool into roving. Continuing spinning practice.

Day 4 - Introduction to spinning on the wheel. Continue to comb and card wool.

Day 5 - Spinning, spinning, spinning!!

Go home with handwashed, dyed, and spun yarn!
